All cruciferous veggies (think cauliflower, cabbage, kale) contain cancer-fighting properties, but broccoli is the only one with a sizable amount of sulforaphane, a particularly potent compound that boosts the body's protective enzymes and flushes out cancer-causing chemicals, says Jed Fahey, ScD. A recent University of Michigan study on mice found that sulforaphane also targets cancer stem cells—those that aid in tumor growth.
Helps fight: breast, liver, lung, prostate, skin, stomach, and bladder cancers
BRAVA Nutrition Rx: The more broccoli, the better, research suggests—so add it wherever you can, from salads to omelets to soups, and add DFH BroccoProtect to you daily regimen or 3-4 times per week.
As little as 10 grams a day of crucifers (less than 1/8 cup of chopped raw cabbage or chopped raw broccoli) can have a significant effect on your risk for developing cancer. Eating broccoli or other crucifers, combined with DFH BroccoProtect, is like getting a natural dose of chemoprevention with broccoli being ghe most powerful. No wonder broccoli is number one on the National Cancer Institute's list of nutrition all-stars!
Cancer fighting phytochemicals
Sulphoaphane and Indole-3-Carbinol
The particular compounds in broccoli that are so effective against cancer include the phytochemicals, sulforaphand and the indoles. Sulphoraphane is a remarkably potent compound that fights cancer on various fronts. It increases the enzymes that help rid the body of carcinogens, it actually kills abnormal cells, and it helps the body limit oxidation.
Indoles work to combat cancer through their effect on estrogen. They block estrogen receptors in breast cancer cells, inhibiting the growth of estrogen-sensitive breast cancers. The most important indole in broccoli - indole-3-carbinol, or I3C - is thought to be an especially effective breast cancer preventive agent.
Broccoli is also rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin B folate, and the carotenoid antioxidants lutein and zeaaxanthin. Studies found that people who ate broccoli more than twice weekly had a 23% lower risk of cataracts when compared to those who ate broccoli less than once a month. Lutein/zeaxanthin and Vitamin C also serve to protect the eyes from the free-radical damage done to the eyes by ultraviolet light. And, it is one of the few vegetables, along with spinach, that are extremely high in CoQ10, a fat-soluble antioxidant that is a major contributor to the production of energy in our bodies, and plays a carido-protective effect.
Please, eat more, 2-3 times per week, raw broccoli (flowerettes and sprouts) and combine this with BroccoProtect™
Not all Broccoli Supplements are Created Equal...
There are currently over 500 journal publications, as well as documented epidemiological evidence, showing that diets rich in broccoli:
are chemoprotective and may reduce the risk of many forms of cancer
promote reduction of PSA levels
possess anti-inflammatory properties
- the scientific research>> (Sulforaphane (Broccoli) loses 90% of its cancer-protective efficacy when it is cooked!)
The BroccoProtect™ Advantage
BroccoProtect™ contains a specially cultivated form of broccoli seed known as BroccoRaphanin™. This proprietary and patented variety of broccoli, Brassica oleracea Hopkins, is particularly rich in glucoraphanin (better known as sulforaphane glucosinolate). Sulforaphane glucosinolate is the direct precursor to sulforaphane.
You would have to consume 500 grams of Fresh Broccoli or 100 grams of sprouts to acquire the same level of sulforaphane that you can get from one capsule of BroccoProtect containing 500mgs BroccoRaphanin®. Just how much broccoli can one eat, even if you like it!
There are other choices available, but consider the BroccoProtect™ benefits not found in any other sulforaphane product:
- all natural, vegetable concentrate
- Supercritical CO2 extraction of broccoli seed – no chemical solvents are used in the extraction
- unmatched stability
- free of maltodextrin coating
How does sulforaphane work?
The dietary isothiocynate Sulforaphane targets numerous biological pathways that (1) modulate Phase I enzymes and (2) elevate Phase II enzymes that are present in all cells.
Once inside the cells, it sends a signal to individual cellular enzymes that turns on the natural cellular defenses housed in all cells. In some cases, sulforaphane is capable of restoring the gene's activity towards normal cell progression. Cells are naturally equipped with their own internal defense system. Much of the cell’s ability to defend itself is due to two main factors, focusing on sulforaphane's ability to produce:
- the antioxidants that quench harmful free radicals
- detoxification enzymes to break down toxins.
