Standard Treatment of Cancer: Four Main Categories
(there are no "silver bullets")
1. Surgical Removal of Tumor
Traditionally, surgery was the first weapon used against cancer, and is now the frontline treatment if a tumor is well-localized and diagnosed early. The limitations are that surgery cannot eliminate all of the cancerous cells (there are over a billion cancer cells covering one single letter of this paragraph, and especially the microfoci containing small undetectable tumors.)
The goal of radiotherapy is to destroy cancerous cells by subjecting them to X-rays or high energy gamma rays. It is a precise, local treatmen applied to a directed area so as to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible since radiation will also kill normal cells. In North America, about 50% of cancer patients will be treated using radiotherapy, in conjunction with surgery and chemotherapy.
This is the treatment that inspires the greatest fear in cancer patients, mostly because of the many side effect that persons experience. However, it is the oncologist's weapon of choice since intravenous administration allows medication to reach cancerous cells that are dispersed throughout the organism, which is impossible in surgery or radiotherapy. The drugs used are extremely powerful cellular poisons that kill cells by preventing them from reproducing, which allows for eradication of cancer cells with minimum impact upon health ones. However, there are limitations as all of our bodies' cells regularly divide, and the healthy cells in our intestinal lining and bone marrow are also prime targets of chemotherapy drugs, which contributes to the toxic side effects.
Because cancer generates chemicals that lower appetite, combined withe the toxic effects of chemotherapy, 40% of patients become malnourished and die from malnutrition. You cannot fight this life-threatening disease while malnourished. 4. Biological therapies
Biological therapies focus the immune system to engage a more vigorous attack on cancer. Lymphokines are produced by the immune system to kill invading cancer cells. Lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells are incubated with a stimulator (interleukin-2), and then injected back into the patient's body for an improved immune response. The major biological therapies are: Interferon, Interleukin, Monoclonal Antibodies, and Tumor Necrosis Factor -- all have toxic side effects.

Cancer cells are more suspectible to heat at 107 degrees Fahrenheit or 42 degrees Celsius compared to normal, healthy cells. This is a complex medical procedure that involves a hot-tub, general anesthesia, and sophisticated medical/oncololgist supervision. Experts have found that applying heat to the patient elevates immune responses klling most cancer cells, but the high heat can be quite difficult for the patient. There are a few hyperthermia centers in North America and Europe.
6. Antiangiogenic Therapy
Antiangiogenic therapy inhibits the growth of new blood vessels. Because new blood vessel growth plays a critical role in many disease conditions, including disorders that cause blindness, arthritis, and cancer, angiogenesis inhibition is a "common denominator" approach to treating these diseases. Antiangiogenic drugs exert their beneficial effects in a number of ways: by disabling the agents that activate and promote cell growth, or by directly blocking the growing blood vessel cells. Angiogenesis inhibitory properties have been discovered in more than 300 substances, ranging from molecules produced naturally in animals and plants, such as green tea extract, to new chemicals synthesized in the laboratory. A number of medicines already approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have also been found to possess antiangiogenic properties, including celecoxib (Celebrex), bortezomib (Velcade), and interferon. The FDA-approved drug, bevacizumab (Avastin), is prescribed to treat colon-rectal cancer. Many inhibitors are currently being tested in clinical trials for a variety of diseases in human patients, and some in veterinary settings.
